Slice the carrots, peel the celeriac and dice them and also cut the celery into slices.

Combine the vegetables, bay leaf and broth or water in the slow cooker and let it simmer for 3 hours on the low setting.

Partly drain the moisture, a couple of spoons of cooking water may still be left behind.

Mash the vegetables roughly and season with nutmeg, pepper and salt.

TIP: Add some fried bacon, slices of smoked sausage or pieces of salmon or mackerel to make a complete meal.
